A course for the preparation of a German language test is a short course where the weakness of the student are analyzed and possibly improved with the main purpose to pass the test.

Once or twice, depending on the duration of the course, a simulation of the test for the chosen level can be done.

Once you pass the language exam you will receive a German certificate. It is attesting your knowledge of the language for the specified level.

“What is a German certificate for”

A certificate is a proof of your knowledge of a language that is not your mother tongue.

Imagine an examiner with tons of curricula in front of him, for the vacancy he is hiring for is requested a medium level of German.

What do you think he would prefer to read in a CV, “Good German knowledge” or “German certificate level B2”?

I think we all agree that the latter is better. Because everyone knows the high-quality standard behind the language test. The certificates are issued by schools and organizations that are internationally recognized. The examiner is not able to test the linguistic ability for a language that he is not able to speak. In other words, he will not be able to test the level of German of the candidate if he doesn’t speak German, and he will be skeptical about candidate’s capability unless he provides him an international certificate.

Did I convince you? Keep reading.

You might already be familiar with the level classification, in case you are not… the language’s knowledge corresponding to a given level is defined in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
It seems to be only bureaucracy, on the other side the criteria for evaluation are standardized and the test is centralized, meaning there is, in the most case, only one organization taking care of assigning the test and evaluating the test results. Therefore an impartial evaluation of the candidate is ensured.

In my experience of teaching, I have seen that the preparation of the language test strongly increases the motivation of the student. He has a clear death-line with a clear target, to get at the end a precise evaluation of the work done. Of course, this raises the stimulus of the student.

But why do you need a certificate?

The advantages aforementioned are more abstract than practical. Have a look here at more practical advantages:

  • to get the German citizenship you need a certificate of at least B1 level
  • to get access to a university you need a certificate of C1 minimum (in very rare case B2 is enough)
  • for the family reunion in Germany, a certificate A1 is needed.

“After getting a German language certificate my life will be better”

Absolutely not. The certificate is only a mean, not the end.

Follow the link for the report of the German Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit).

On the other side, there is a report from the end of 2014, linked on the right, that shows how employees immigrated in Germany and having good German knowledge in average get 20% more salary.

Anyone knowing the German job market can confirm, if not quantitatively at least qualitatively that this result is not a surprise.

And there is much more, because the topic of the certification is wide if you have got time have a look at my German language test page.
